Ankh Morpork

The Opera House

(NA) We have (probably) a Operahouse Interior courtesy of pThomas
(SWa) speaking of tht does his theatre have a decent fly tower - cos if not Durham might be worth investigation... (CP) it's a very basic arrangement there. Technical artistry *will* have to be done elsewhere (CP) eric is, or was, I don't know which, scouting out some london theatres for that.
(SWa) IIRC he was thinking of Imperial's space, which I think is quite nice...

The Printery

(DS) OK - I've been thinking about Goatberger's printery. The main thing is that I believe it might be possible to do it without actually having print machinery.
I think it might be OK to have the scene between Goatberger and Nanny & Granny in a corridor or vestibule, and *imply* the machinery by sound effects
(Ali) David: you could probably get away with the externals and the office , yes?
the thing is, with that location premise, it frees up finding somewhere that in all relaity wouldn't really exist, or would require a *lot* of work to set up

Walter's Mum's House

Below the Opera house

(CP) pThomas was looking at the london underground for that
(SWa) basement of any large london building would do, one with arches etc...

The Opera House

Front

(DS) I'm inclined to try the exterior of the Opera House as CG although, I will insist the closer-up shots be done outside an appropriate location. Pthomas gave me the URL of one place, but it will be a mish-mash of many places, a sort of cross between the Paris Opera House, the British Museum, and Notre Dame Cathedral.

Side

(DS)That's all on the front. The sides are bare blank brick, grubby and plastered with old bills
(Swa) Surely anything other than the front can just be a random alleyway anywere?
(Na) If we really wanted to go far, have a poster for "Blown Away"
(DS) I think that's a given :-)
(Swa) I imagine the front of the op house as like teh Palace theatre (london) but without the porch and the large signs saying "Les Mis"...

(SWh) Shrewsbury has a lot of cobbled streets - don't know about alleyways (DS) But what are the buildings like?

(Ali) what we really need is access to the Corrie set :)

Esme's Shops

Bucket's Office

Undershaft's Music Room

The Inn

(Ali) I also think Porch House in Lacock would make a good coaching inn if we still need it http://www.t-jdann.dircon.co.uk/porch.html

Outside AM

(DS) I keep visualising A-M architecture like Dickensian dk brown scraggly brickwork, with awful mortarwork etc. Filth, squalor, rats, smoke, the sort of thing Gilliam managed with Jabberwocky.

Underlit interiors, tallow lamps and candles everywhere - this will help location scouting, since it might be easier to have interiors that are *implied* rather than fully laid out

Why go to all the trouble of having a cracked wall and falling plaster, when the damn thing can be in shadow?

The rats can be implied by sound (or maybe one or two in shot at some point), but on the whole, Gilliam got away with murder on Jabberwocky, because *so much* was in shadow and darkness.

It's just that Ankh-Morpork does not strike one as a city of wide streets, trees and sunshine.

(SWh) IIRC, most of the outside stuff in Maskerade _is_ night (scene with Granny & muggers).

(CP) Corinne imagines ankhmorpork like an indian city with gargoyles, mostly slum housing, highrise and low, then wide open vistas of ankh with posh palaces, etc.

(LC) I imagine it like Durham centre, only dirtier But that's because I live here

Lancre

(CP) Joy suggested a national trust preserved village (Ali) did she have a specific one in mind?

(NA) Yes, it was Lacock in Wilts.
(SWa) See http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/scripts/nthandbook.dll?ACTION=PROPERTY&PROPERTYID=319
(KS) http://www.t-jdann.dircon.co.uk for pictures

(CP) a bit too elizabethan?
(Ali) but given that the villagers wouldn't have brand spanking new houses anyway, we could probably get away with it

(CP)its in sweden, but i thought this was more the thing we were looking for... http://www.webcom.com/~trw/Sweden/Img0078.html
(DS) ye gods, it's Granny's cottage!
(NA) That's Perfect. Bugger.

(SWh) Since then, we've decided that apfers are pedants so Granny's cottage has to have an upstairs, & we're putting that picture of Corinne's on the website so that other people can hopefully say `Yes, I know one just like that'.
